EMILY YOUNG ENTERS THE V&A
NEWS: EMILY YOUNG ENTERS THE V&A
2024 has been an important and highly successful year for Britain’s greatest living free carver, Emily Young.
Earlier this year, a new monograph, Emily Young: Stone Carvings and Paintings, written by the art historian Jon Wood was published by Lund Humphries. Exploring her influences and creative process, the book includes 120 illustrated works from her archive, as well as works for sale at the gallery, such as The Flowering Song of the Troubadour III, 2021, which is illustrated on the cover.
Following a major exhibition during the Venice Biennale in collaboration with the European Cultural Centre, Young was announced the winner of the 2024 Venice Biennale European Cultural Centre prize for Sculpture and Installation. She was invited to exhibit six works, one monumental sculpture entitled, Lost Mountain Head I, in the gardens at the edge of the lagoon at the Giardini della Marinaressa and five smaller works on display at the Palazzo Mora.
More recently, Emily’s sculpture, Warrior Poet, has joined the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum and is now on display in Room 21 in The Dorothy and Michael Hintze Galleries, alongside sculpture from the 4th century to the present day, with masterpieces by Michelangelo, Bernini and Rodin.
We look forward to our next exhibition of Young’s work in the summer of 2025. In the meantime, we have a beautiful selection of small torsos on display carved from Macauba Quartzite, its fine blue and white figurations reminding the artist of water.
