We are delighted to be participating in TEFAF Maastricht 2022, back in all its glory and this year at midsummer! Our selection will encompass Old Master, Impressionist and Post-Impressionist and Dutch Romantic paintings.
Highlights include three outstanding cabinet paintings on copper by the celebrated Flemish artist Jan Brueghel the Elder (1569-1625). Orpheus playing to Pluto and Proserpine, 1594 was made during Jan’s early career in Rome and reflects his encounter with Classical and Renaissance art. A fish market in front of a town, 1605, teems with tiny, brilliantly-observed figures, conjuring up the vibrant spirit of Jan’s home town, the port of Antwerp. A village street with travellers, 1614, is an idyllic evocation of Flemish country life, designed to appeal to his sophisticated clientele, which included the Brussels Court of the Habsburg Archdukes.
Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750) was one of the finest Dutch flower painters of the last decades of the seventeenth and first decades of the eighteenth century, brought up in a prominent scientific family. She combined a stellar career lasting six decades with marriage and ten children. Still life of flowers in a glass vase, with a bird’s nest, 1738, painted when Ruysch was seventy-four, displays her exquisite technique and superb understanding of plants.
French paintings will include a poetic group of northern French landscapes by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Albert Marquet enjoying the Atlantic coast and visions of the paradisal South of France, with Charles Camoin portraying Bords de l’Arc, 1907 and Pierre Bonnard infinite, Mediterranean blue in Matinée à Arcachon, c.1930.
